Like every other member of the Catholic Church, the priest is called to respond to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him. Jesus calls all of the baptised members of His Church to holiness. Within this, a man discerns his particular calling to the Catholic priesthood.
A man becomes a priest by being ordained, receiving the gift of Holy Orders. As St Thomas Aquinas said of this, 'priestly ordination is administered as a means of salvation, not for an individual man, but rather for the whole Church.’
Priests make promises of celibacy, obedience and a commitment to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
A priest can then administer the sacraments, but not on the basis of his own power. Through his ordination, he can minister ‘in persona Christi’ (in the person of Christ), drawing on the transforming, healing and saving power of Jesus Christ.
